Do you feel blocked? Are you not getting things done that you should be getting done?
Well, we all put things off now and again because we don’t want to do them, or because we have too many other things on our plates. Putting things off, big or small, is part of being human.
If you feel like you are procrastinating a lot, then listen to these things that might be going on in your mind:
1. Maybe you don’t like to do something or keep putting it off because you’re afraid or fear of failure. Sometimes it’s easy to want to be the best at something and the thoughts of not succeeding at the task makes you not want do it at all.
2. Sometimes you may feel that the task is too big. Maybe you don’t know where to start. You may need someone to guide you and help you set up little steps to help you move forwards.
3. You might be a perfectionist and you must have it done perfectly or not at all.
When your procrastination leaves you feeling discouraged and overburdened, however, it is time to take action. Here are some tips:
- If you are in a messy environment, then start the big ‘Clean-Up’. It will get your head straight and you can start your task then.
- Eliminate all distractions, like emails, phones, TV.
- Find a quiet and peaceful place to work.
- Break things down into small manageable chunks. Write down a Basic Plan.
- Get a timing schedule in place and write down your goals to be met.
- Set a time limit for the whole task.
- Start with 10 minutes un-distracted effort.
- Make and keep yourself accountable.
- Get a new attitude about your task and get unblocked.
- Have a go at it! You’ll be amazed at what results you can achieve in just 10 minutes of concentrated effort.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
